![]() HELP in working with impoverished street children in Riga, the capital of Latvia, giving them much needed financial and pastoral support. Winter temperatures can get as low as -30 degrees. Children live in squalid one room homes with no heating. Some of these homes have no glass in the windows. Many parents suffer from depression and alcoholism. The welfare system is ineffectual. HELP is working with individuals, partner charities and schools to raise funds to make life more bearable for these children and their families. HELP is working in Riga in: Replacing old, dysfunctional toilets and washing facilities. Providing heating in a refuge for children. Providing clothes and food for street children and children in very poor families. HELP is also setting up a Family Centre - see the page on Isaiah House - where children, and their parents where possible, will have a safe, warm home in which pastoral care can be given. Life skills and employment training will be given thus helping to break the cycle of poverty.
